Refereeing at Virginia United FC

Virginia United FC runs a junior referee program for players aged 12 and over. Refereeing is a great way to stay involved in the game, earn money on Saturdays, and build real leadership skills. We support all our referees with training, guidance, and a friendly environment to develop.

Whether you're brand new to refereeing or already accredited, we'd love to have you on board.

How It Works

Each week before Saturday's games, our Referee Coordinator sends out a sign-up sheet. You add your name to the games you're available for and receive your official allocations on Thursday night.

Here's what to expect:

  • Sign up opens Monday and closes Thursday
  • Allocations are sent Thursday night via our WhatsApp group
  • Arrive at the club at least 10 minutes before your first game
  • Match balls and ref bibs are available in the referee room
  • Ground Officials are on site every Saturday if you need anything

What's Involved on Game Day

MiniRoos games run in FQ junior format with short breaks between each half. No scores are recorded officially for MiniRoos, so you can focus entirely on managing the game and keeping it safe and fun for the kids.

What to bring:

  • Your whistle
  • A stopwatch or watch (you manage the clock)
  • Your referee shirt - black shirt and black shorts are fine if you're still waiting on one (Contact us if you need one!)

Where to go: Head to the referee room when you arrive. Your match balls and bibs are there. Ground Officials are at the club throughout the day.

Referee Pay

All referees are paid for their games. We follow the FQ referee pays for each year to make sure we're as aligned as we can be as a club.

Payments are processed every Friday for the games refereed the previous weekend.

MiniRoos Rules and Resources

All VUFC referees are expected to be familiar with the official Football Queensland MiniRoos rules, including ball sizes and game times for each age group. You can download the full document below.

A printed and laminated copy of the key rules is also available in the referee room on game day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How old do I need to be to referee?

A: We welcome referees aged 12 and over. Younger referees will be supported and mentored on the day.

Q: Do I need a referee shirt?

A: Ideally yes, but black shirt and black shorts are acceptable while you're getting started. Let Isabel know and we'll sort a shirt for you.

Q: What if I'm not available one week?

A: No problem. You only sign up for the weeks you're available. There's no obligation to be there every Saturday.

Q: How do I get paid?

A: Payments are processed every Friday for the previous week's games. Make sure you sign the payment sheet in the referee room after your last game.

Q: Who do I go to if there's a problem on the day?

A: Ground Officials are at the club every Saturday. Come to them for anything you need.

Q: What if I've never refereed before?

A: That's absolutely fine. We will help you get started, and there will always be experienced referees and club staff on site.
