U8-U12 Academy Support Program (ASP)

The Academy Support Program (ASP) is ideal for players looking for the next stage on from community football. The ASP features qualified coaches, that are also involved in our high-performance pathway, that work under the guidance of our high experienced ASP Director.

The ASP is the pathway to our FQ Academy Program. The coaching curriculum is adapted from our Academy Program to allow players the opportunity to develop skills necessary for the next step in their football journey.

We offer ASP teams for both male and female players.

Our U8 ASP boys team is identified as our Pre-Academy Support Team and can include identified players turning both 7 and 8 years of age in the calendar year.

Our girls ASP teams vary from season to season dependent on identified talent within a given age group.

How to develop

How do you raise the national standard of players graduating to play for the Brisbane Roar or the Socceroo’s?

The key is to start young and ensure the base of the skill pyramid is learned well. It’s very hard to adjust or fix techniques learned poorly in junior football, therefore it is imperative that skills are learned and developed in the right environment.

U8 - U12 is part of the so called ‘golden age of motor learning’. In this period before entering the growing spurt that goes hand in hand with puberty, children are well balanced and coordinated. This makes them very adaptive to developing motor skills (techniques) especially since this also is the brain’s key development period.

In no other development phase in life will motor learning happen faster than here. As a logical consequence of the above it makes sense that we make optimal use of this period to lay a sustainable technical foundation. Therefore it’s extremely important that we have qualified professional coaches working with players showing promise at those age categories.

The ASP has been put in place at Virginia United FC to help guide player development. The U8 team aim to ensure that the overriding focus is still on fun. We use some hidden learning along with specially adapted sessions from the U9-U12 FQ Academy program to develop the players core skills.

Who is the ASP suitable for?

Playing in the ASP at Virginia provides an environment to develop FFA target cores skills set out in the National Curriculum.
Players should trial for the program if:

  • They consistently show above average football abilities on a consistent basis in games and training.
  • Are able to commit to two training sessions per week
  • Are willing to listen and learn in the training environment.
  • Have an interest in developing and being placed in a challenging environment

Please note that this program is not beneficial for all players. Please consider the above points before registering your child for a trial.
The ASP squads take between 10-12 players per season.
Any players deemed not quite ready will be placed in one of the clubs many community age group teams.
